The Brookfield School girl was lucky to not be severely injured and has relaunched a petition for a crossing outside the school gates as part of her deputy head girl role, and has the backing of head teacher Ria Allan.

The 15-year-old wants to get as many people as possible to sign the school prefect’s online petition to raise awareness of the dangers to people when there is not a school crossing patrol in the area.

Although the accident happened three years ago in Brook Lane near Highnam Gardens, when Sally was just 11, she explained the horror which she said no-one ever expects to happen to them.

“I remember the feeling of getting hit. That’s something that will never leave me. It was the biggest impact that anyone would ever feel,” said Sally of Brook Lane, Sarisbury Green.

“I was then trying to get up and out of the road and landed on my drive and collapsed.

“I was unconscious for a short period of time. I luckily didn’t break anything. The ambulance thought I’d broken my spine, pelvis, legs and hips.

“I had my trumpet on my back. I was told if I hadn’t had that on my back I would’ve broken my spine.

“I never saw the car. It was raining and I had my umbrella at an angle. When I checked there was no car but as I stepped out it was behind the umbrella. Nobody was at fault at all. She was going the right speed limit.

“I was off school for a few weeks because it was quite traumatic. I was quite battered and bruised and damaged a few ligaments in my ankle.”

Sally said she and her mum began a petition initially after the accident and sent it to the council but to no avail. So Sally has reignited the campaign with plans to send it directly to Sean Woodward, the transport lead for Hampshire County Council, who has already shown interest in receiving it.

She said: “It would be really great if we could get a permanent crossing outside the school and maybe moving the lollipop lady or man outside Highnam Gardens.

“It’s not only going to benefit the children at Brookfield, but the people living on Brook Lane, the kids from all the feeder school walking that way and all other residents.

“Sean Woodward said he never received a copy of the last petition. He said he looks forward to seeing us in future. It will be great to get his input as he’ll know the statistics in the area.”
