While Tranmere had been struggling of late, and the early League One leaders were on the the brink of dropping out of the top six.

New designations for Fareham town centre car parks

There has been no increase in charges but now drivers will be able to park more cheaply if they leave their cars outside the very centre of the town.

The changes are:

  • Car parks are no longer called short stay or long stay. They are now inner, outer and premium car parks.
  • The five hour limit has been removed so shoppers can stay as long as they like in any Fareham town centre car park.
  • Malthouse Lane and Trinity Street car parks are now outer car parks, saving 30p per hour compared to the previous tariff.
  • Outer car parks are now charged at 70p per hour up to five hours and then £3.50 for over five hours (all day).
  • Free parking is available on Sundays in all outer car parks.
  • Season parking ticket holders are able to use their tickets in all outer car parks.
  • Parking in inner car parks will be £1 per hour, the same as the previous short stay car parks.
  • Market Quay, the only premium car park, remains at £1.50 per hour.
  • No parking charges will be active on Christmas Day or Easter Sunday.

Deputy Executive Leader of Fareham Borough Council, Councillor Trevor Cartwright said: “Visitors will have options to choose whether they want to pay more or less, depending on how close to the shops they want to park.

“Cheaper hourly rates at Malthouse Lane and Trinity Street car parks will benefit the independent shops at the west end of West Street.”

Locks Heath Pumas host Alresford this weekend in their last fixture of the regular season.

With sixth place very much in their sights, a win against struggling Alresford could help them seal a mid-table finish.

The Pumas currently have 40 points and Nomads lie just one ahead on 41.

But their season has been a great success and they will aim to make it three straight wins with Saturday’s clash.

Alresford have two more matches to play after this one, but both of those are against title challenging opposition.

The match is at 2.15pm at Brookfield School.

Locks Heath close in on Hampshire Premier title

Locks Heath will edge closer to the Hampshire Premier League title if they can defeat AFC Aldermaston this weekend and extend their 22 point lead at the top of the table.

The league leaders have excelled this season scoring more than 100 goals as they look a cut above the rest of the pack.

Locks Heath beat Fleetlands 3-1 on Easter Monday and the league’s high flyers lie 22 points clear of their nearest challengers AFC Stoneham and 27 points clear of Colden Common, although those sides have six and eight games in hand respectively.

But with only four more league games after this weekend for Locks Heath they just need to keep their nerve a little longer to be sure of the title.

AFC Aldermaston lie in fifth place and their recent form has seen them win four of their last six matches and are very much in the mix for a top four finish.

The last time these two met, Locks Heath edged to a 2-1 win way back in September.

The match between Locks Heath and AFC Aldermaston is on Saturday April 6. Kick off is at 3pm at Locks Heath Recreational Ground.

Fareham Heathens will look to start to bring a respectable end to their campaign when they host Nomads this weekend.

Their form hasn’t been great of late with six defeats on the bounce which leaves them in 10th place with 17 points.

But there is a chance to resurrect a disappointing season in their final three games.

Their opponents, Nomads, lie safe in mid-table and a point above Heathens’ local rivals Locks Heath Pumas.

The match between the Heathens and Nomads is a 2.15pm kick off on Saturday April 6.

Pompey aim for four home wins on spin

Portsmouth are aiming to win four home matches on the spin when they host Stevenage Borough this weekend.

Pompey have won their last three matches at Fratton Park and kept clean sheets in those three.

But even in the unlikely event that they can get out of the relegation zone before the end of the season they still face a potential 10-point deduction which, in effect, means they are already relegated.

David Connolly scored the winner against Tranmere Rovers and the 35-year old will be hoping to keep his goal scoring touch after his fifth of the season.

Their opponents, Stevenage have lost three of their last six matches but re-appointed Graham Westley at the end of last month and his first match saw his side beat League One rock bottom side Hartlepool United.

This is the manager’s third stint at the club after he left for Preston North End before being fired last month.

Kick off between the two sides is at 3pm at Fratton Park.

This weekend sees former manager Nigel Adkins come face to face with his successor Mauricio Pochettino as Saints travel to Reading.

The Saints are brimming with confidence after two wins in their last two against Liverpool and Chelsea.

Gaston Ramirez was a substitute against the European champions last week but is in line for a recall.

Artur Boruc is to be assessed after he was substituted at half time in the match last weekend.

The Saints lie in 12th place but will be aware of the importance of the match in their bid for survival.

Nigel Adkins took charge of Reading for the first time last weekend as they lost 4-1 to Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium.

The former Saints manager will be hoping for an improved performance from his new side.

Adkins will also be seeking revenge over Saints Chairman Nicola Cortese who dismissed the manager in January after just two defeats in 12 matches.

A man from Titchfield has been fined and ordered to pay compensation for urinating through a resident’s letterbox.

Billy Joe Thorne, 21, of Lower Bellfield damaged the front door and carpet of a house in Fareham on March 12.

Thorne also damaged a Peugeot 106 car by kicking the wing mirrors, letting air out of the tyres and jumping on the bonnet causing dents which amounted to £200 worth of damage, Fareham Magistrates Court heard.

The court heard Thorne was disappointed in his behaviour and that he had had a small amount of alcohol and was on antibiotics at the time of the incident.

He pleaded guilty to the two offences, was fined £180 and ordered to pay £200 compensation to Ms Fawcett as well as £85 court costs and a £20 victim surcharge.

Locks Heath Pumas completed their last game of the season in great fashion with a 36-3 home win against Alresford.

A battle between the backs for the ball

And once again they impressed with great passages of play in what was the conclusion to some terrific form from the Pumas in the spring sunshine at Brookfield School.

The Pumas didn’t take Alresford for granted and were quick to ensure victory to finish the season well, racking up a number of tries in the first half alone.

With the win the Pumas finish the season on 45 points and lie in sixth place.

But with Nomads still having games to play, that league position may still change.

The Pumas will feel happy with their season which has seen them finish in mid table and well clear of a possible basement battles in the league.

Graham Lindsey struck a terrific hat-trick that brought up his 100th goal for Fareham Town as he helped them to a 4-1 win over Alton on Saturday.

The match saw a resurgent Fareham town take on a lowly opposition in Alton in a thrilling fixture.

Having beaten their rivals AFC Porchester in midweek, the Creeksiders were brewing with confidence as they looked to continue their resurgence.

The game was controlled by Fareham from start to finish as Alton offered very little threat.

Graham Lindsey’s man of the match performance helped him reach the pesonal milestone. Matt Burt got the other goal.

With the win, Fareham Town remain in eighth place but close to within goal difference of GE Hamble in seventh place.

They are also within three points of Bemerton who are in fifth place.

And they will have a chance to bridge that gap when they play their next match on Saturday April 13 which is against Bournemouth at Home.

Goalless draw for Pompey as run is extended

By Martin Rowe

Portsmouth extended their unbeaten run to five matches after a goalless draw at home to Stevenage Borough.

Portsmouth were seeking a third straight home win as they attempted to pull out of the bottom four.

The visitors did think they had the lead after the half hour mark as Filipe Morais tucked the ball away only for it to be disallowed for offside.

He also had a great chance when he met a cross with a header, but it bounced just wide.

Adam Webster replaced Yassin Moutaouakil on 79 minutes and moments later his diving header was well saved and caught by Stevenage goalkeeper Steve Arnold.

Stevenage did conjure one last chance which saw Marcus Haber head against the Pompey crossbar late on.

But it was another clean sheet at Fratton Park as they continue to hope for the  possibility of getting out of the bottom four.

The draw leaves Portsmouth just two points behind Oldham who lie just above the drop zone after they lost 2-1 at home to Carlisle United.

Heathens stop rot with vital win

Fareham Heathens halted a run of six straight defeats in some style with a 36-11 win over Nomads on Saturday.

The match saw 10th against sixth place in the Snows Group Hampshire Two rugby division.

The odds were stacked very much against the Heathens with Nomads the favourites despite their recent poor form.

But the favouritism may have got to Nomads as they seemed isolated and out of character as the Heathens were allowed to run riot.

With the win, the Heathens edge closer to their nearest rivals Alresford narrowing the gap to just seven points.

But even with the win, the Heathens remain in 10th place.

Their next match is an away fixture against rock bottom Stoneham. This match is on April 13 and is their penultimate game of the season.
